Abstract

William H. Savery (1865-1949) was a paper manufacturer and president of the Harpers Ferry Paper Company, the Harpers Ferry Electic Light Company, and the Shenandoah Pulp Company. He was also president and general manager of the Parsons Engineering Company. Consists of thirty-seven diaries and notebooks of Savery, dating from 1873 to 1918.

Biographical Note

William H. Savery (1865-1949) was a paper manufacturer and president of three companies that had been started by his father in the late nineteenth century: the Harpers Ferry Paper Company, the Harpers Ferry Electic Light Company, and the Shenandoah Pulp Company. He was also president and general manager of the Parsons Engineering Company. Savery was the eldest son of Thomas H. Savery (1837-1910) and Sarah Pim Savery (1837-1928). William H. Savery was educated at Haverford College and later went to work for his father at the Pusey & Jones Company, a shipbuilder and papermaking machinery manufacturer in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Savery was also active in the Technical Association of the Paper and Pulp industry.

Content Description

This collection consists of thirty-seven diaries and notebooks of William H. Savery, nearly all with his signature in the front. The contents concerning his work with the Pusey and Jones Co., the Shenandoah Pulp Company, the Parsons Engineering Company, among others. Most have various enclosures such as technical notes, calling cards, newspaper clippings, blueprints, personal letters, carbon copies of business letters, notes, bills, photographs, and blueprints. The diaries date from 1873 to 1918.

The collection also includes five items belonging to his father, Thomas H. Savery, these are notebooks and checkbooks dating from 1873 to 1910, and one notebook of J. Newman Davis of the Pusey & Jones Co. from 1893. Davis' notebook shows standard of prices of parts and raw materials alphabetically listed.
