Historical Note

Ansco G. Bruinier, Jr. (1898-1993) served as the DuPont Company’s Technical Advertising Manager for its Organic Chemicals Department, Dyestuffs Division at Deepwater, New Jersey, from the 1930s until his retirement in 1963. DuPont first began a research program in dyes in 1916 to take advantage of the wartime disruption of German supplies of dyestuffs. The following year, the Jackson Laboratory was established at Deepwater, New Jersey, as a major production facility for dyestuffs. The Dyestuffs Department was formally organized in 1921.

In 1931, the department was absorbed into the Organic Chemicals Department. DuPont's dyestuffs research peaked in the 1950s, with Jackson Lab chemists developing dyes for DuPont's Orlon and Dacron synthetic fibers, and then declined in the mid-1960s due to increased international competition. DuPont restructured its Organic Chemicals Department in 1978 and it was absorbed into the Chemicals, Dyes, and Pigments Department. DuPont left the dye industry completely in 1980.

Throughout his career at DuPont, Bruinier wrote and published numerous articles on the American dyestuffs industry, including its early history and breakthroughs in the field. He was also involved with trade organizations such as the Color Association of the United States and the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists.

Scope and Content

The Ansco G. Bruinier, Jr. papers document his time as an advertising manager for DuPont’s Dyestuffs Division, and include both his work and some personal papers. The papers were found in his travel portfolio and are mostly fragmentary.

The first series covers Bruinier’s professional career as DuPont’s Technical Advertising Manager, Dyestuffs Division, Organic Chemicals Department from 1934 to 1962, and offers insight into pre-war, World War II, and post-war era corporate sales strategy and advertisement methods. On a lesser scale, Bruinier’s work papers also shed some light onto mid-twentieth century corporate job structure and hierarchy. Many of the documents and correspondence included were retained by Bruinier because of personal importance, and mostly reflect his achievements and contributions during his career at DuPont. Accordingly, he largely retained fragments of copies of the DuPont Newsletter and Magazine, and articles in industrial trade journals due to him being the primary contributor or author.

Interoffice letters largely discuss meetings, company visits, and various aspects of sales and advertising, including articles and advertisements produced for publication in industrial trade journals. Also included are DuPont organizational charts, showing the company’s complete corporate hierarchy. Organizational charts are most extensive for the Organic Chemicals Department, Dyes and Chemicals Division Technical Laboratory, and track personnel and departmental changes from the 1940s through 1962. Other miscellaneous aspects of Bruinier’s career are represented, including travel expenses from his trips to various meetings and conventions.

Bruinier’s personal papers are largely fragmentary and were found intermingled within his work portfolio. The bulk of this series includes incoming letters to Bruinier from friends, coworkers, and associates, as well as his wife, Olga. There are also two letters from his mother and father, one of which urges an investment opportunity. Other files contain miscellaneous personal mementos that Bruinier collected on his travels as a DuPont advertising manager.

The third series includes a run of advertisement proofs from DuPont's Dyestuffs Division used in various industrial trade journals for the paper, cotton, wool, and textile industries. These include American Dyestuffs Reporter, American Wool & Cotton Reporter, Textile Colorist, Rayon Textile Monthly, Paper Trade Journal, and others. Advertisement proofs for the Better Fabrics Testing Bureau, Inc.'s "Color Tested" seal used for color fastness are also included. Additionally, there are several DuPont Dyestuffs advertisement proofs for inclusion in issues of the fashion journal Daily News Record and its offshoot, Women's Wear Daily.
