Historical Note

E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont Company. The company was established in 1802 by Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) and his son Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834); the company began with the production of gunpowder. The du Pont family purchased a mill site on the banks of the Brandywine River just north of Wilmington, Delaware. Throughout the 1900s and 1910s, the company shifted its focus away from gunpowder production toward chemistry innovations.

The DuPont Building was one of the first high-rises in Wilmington, Delaware; it occupied an entire block bound by 10th, 11th, Orange, and Market streets. The building was built in phases, with the original building constructed in 1908 fronting Rodney Square. The final addition was completed in 1923. In the windows of the DuPont Building, the DuPont Company created displays highlighting their products and chemistry research and contributions.

Until early 2015 the building housed DuPont's headquarters.

Arrangement

The files of this collection have generally been arranged chronologically, with the exception of Series III. Biography, in which files are arranged alphabetically by executives' last name.

Scope and Content

The collection has been arranged into six series. With the exception of Series II. Finance, each series often contains information relevant to subjects in other series, which often helps to define a given subject more clearly.

Series I. Organization and history dates from 1802 to 2012. This series contains photocopies of early certificates of incorporation and amendments as DuPont grew and reworded its name through the years. Also included are by-laws of the company from the early twentieth century to later decades. Company values, vision, and mission statements are listed, as are annual reports and descriptions of several of DuPont's laboratories and manufacturing plants. Histories of several DuPont departments are documented, and nine transcriptions of oral histories with corporate executives are included.

Series II. Finance dates from 1907 to 1999. In addition to annual financial reports and reports to stockholders, this series includes information about the acquisition and divestiture of Conoco, Incorporated, the acquisition of New England Nuclear Corporation, and several stock transactions and registrations with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Series III. Biographies dates from 1802 to 2014. This series includes biographies of retired corporate executives of DuPont. Biographies and photographs are arranged alphabetically, except where presidents, chief executive officers, and chairmen were inserted into the same general alphabetical order, but not necessarily in perfect sequence.

Series IV. Speeches dates from 1981 to 1999. Included in this series are speeches by corporate executives, arranged chronologically. An Employee list will appear in a folder of speeches at the beginning of each segment of speakers, listing speaker, title of speech, and venue, thus allowing the placement of several speeches in each folder, without repeating all the information about the speeches in the titles of each folder. Information contained in employee lists is intended to be helpful in clarifying the intent of the speeches.

Series V. Programs and events dates from 1927 to 2002. Special events in this series include anniversaries of selected DuPont plants, anniversaries of Teflon and Butacite, the celebration of the opening of the Seaford plant, and the 50th anniversary of nylon. Information about the 200th anniversary of the DuPont Company is also included.

Series VI. The DuPont Network News dates from 1997 to 2004. This publication was an online company daily news service for DuPont employees. Most issues include money matters, company values, and important articles of value to all employees. Titles of the folders are only sample subjects taken from the issues of the newsletters in each folder.
