Historical Note

The Delaware State Trapshooting Championship dates back to 1903 when the sport of trapshooting was just in its infancy. The earliest state tournaments were held at the Du Pont Gun Club, on the site of the present day Experimental Station of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. Following the du Pont Gun Club’s closure in 1916, the tournament began to rotate between the Yorklyn Gun Club and the Wilmington Trapshooting Association near Bellevue, Delaware. Throughout the twentieth century, the shoot would continue to be held at clubs such as the Silver Lake Sportsman’s Association in Magnolia, Delaware and the present Wilmington Trapshooting Association, located in Newark, Delaware. Due to a large number of participants, the tournament is now held at the Millington Sportsman’s Association in Millington Maryland.

The Grand American World Trapshooting Tournaments began in 1900 at the Interstate Park in Queens, New York. For the next two decades, it was held at the du Pont Gun Club in Wilmington, Delaware, and cities such as St. Louis, Chicago, and Columbus. Beginning in 1923, the tournament made its home for the next 81 years at the headquarters of the Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) in Vandalia, Ohio. In its infancy, the shoot hosted a mere 20 shooters, but has grown to host over 5,800 shooters by the turn of the millennium. In 2006, the ATA moved to Sparta, Illinois and relocated the Grand American to that location at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex.
