Biographical note
Charles J. Pedersen (1904-1989) was a research chemist with E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company who spent most of his career at the Jackson Laboratory in Deepwater, New Jersey, and the Elastomer Chemicals Department at Wilmington, Delaware.
Pedersen was born in Pusan, Korea, on October 3, 1904, and was educated at the University of Dayton and M.I.T. His major achievement was the discovery of crown ethers, and he shared the 1987 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, the only DuPont researcher to win that honor to date. Pedersen died on October 27, 1989.
