Biographical Note

Paul Arthur, Jr., (1915-2000) spent most of his career as an industrial research chemist in the Central Research Department of the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, where his most notable achievement was his work on Crolyn, a type of magnetic tape which was used primarily in the instrumentation, video, and computer industries. He earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from Massachusetts Institute of Technology before joining the DuPont Company.

During laboratory studies of hydrothermal synthesis at high temperatures and pressures, Dr. Arthur discovered a novel preparation of chromium dioxide, or chromium (IV) oxide, a magnetic powder derived from chromium trioxide. Further work resulted in a 1960 patent for bulk preparation and its incorporation into recording tapes. Recording tape utilizing chromium dioxide as an emulsion provided an improvement in both signal output and resolution over earlier iron dioxide tapes. By 1971 DuPont had licensed the technology, which it had trademarked "Crolyn," to such electronic companies as Badische Anilin- & Soda-Fabrik (BASF), Sony Corporation, Philips Company, Ampex Corporation, and Memorex Corporation. Dr. Arthur retired from the DuPont Company after a 40-year career and became president of Imprimatur, Inc., a communications consulting firm. He passed away in 2000.
