Vertical subject files, 1950-2012
Part of collection: Catalyst Inc. records (2728)
Dates
- Creation: 1950-2012
Scope and Contents
This vertical subject file focused on topics related to women and work was maintained by the Catalyst Information Center for approximately forty years and was available to all Information Center users. Arranged alphabetically by subject, it consists of clippings from the popular press, business and human resources trade publications, academic articles from scholarly journals, book reviews, government publications, dissertations, and occasional monographs. The file titles are those used by Catalyst in the original filing schema; cross-references are added in some instances when Catalyst’s preferred subject term changed, i.e., from ‘Black women’ to ‘African American women.’ The vertical subject files were kept in several iterations, with older sets of files boxed, presumably when space constraints and/or relevance dictated it. These iterations were merged into a single vertical file for ease of use. These materials are of particular interest to researchers interested in changes in media coverage of women’s issues over time.
