Scope and Contents

The Advertising and promotional materials series includes advertising scrapbooks and files relating to cooperative advertising, advertising agencies, merchandising and packaging, and marketing. The six advertising scrapbooks in this series feature Quaker's advertisements for lace, tablecloths, curtains, and hosiery from the years 1913 and 1936 to 1951. They include mostly tearsheets from advertisements in textile industry and women's magazines. Some tearsheets from other lace product manufacturers are also included.

Cooperative advertising materials in this series include correspondence, memoranda, invoices, agreements, and audits regarding promotion of Quaker products in local vendor advertisements. Advertising agency files (bulk dates 1928-1931) contain invoices and correspondence about Quaker promotions. Reports from the Home Window Decorating Guild (1939-1941) relate to marketing and promotions and include a study of lace color preferences. A 1931 sales study by the J. Walter Thompson Company provides revealing information about the lace curtain industry, Quaker Lace's position within the industry and consumer and decorator attitudes about home decorating and lace curtains. A company self-survey (possibly completed in preparation for the J. Walter Thompson study) supplies information about the company's sales history, production, and marketing.
