Accession: 1411Identifier: 1411-XXVII.

Dates

  • Creation: 1945-1978

Historical Note

The Public Relations Division housed several departments including the Advertising Department, Community Relations Department, and Motion Picture Department. The division was re-examined in early 1976, leading to organizational changes and the creation of the Communications Department, where some of the responsibilities were moved.

Scope and Contents

The Public Relations Division series documents NAM’s various public relations campaigns of the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. There are files documenting the production of NAM sponsored films, campus programs, the impact of various types of advertisements designed to interpret business profits, opinions of NAM members, and relations with the General Federation of Women’s Groups. Included are public opinion surveys, conducted by the Opinion Research Corporation and the Psychological Corporation, that sought to assess the attitude of the American people to big business, as well as public appraisal of the NAM as an organization. For additional Public Relations Division records, see Series I Central Files.

The Public Relations Policy Committee (PRPC), composed of NAM members, approved the work of the Public Relations Division and was very active, particularly in advertising campaigns. Committee members included C. M. Chester (1877-1965), Cloud Wampler (1895-1973), Walter D. Fuller (1882-1964), John Holmes (1891-1961), Malcolm Muir (1885-1979), J. Howard Pew (1882-1971), H. W. Prentis Jr. (1884-1959), and Morris Sayre (1885-1953). The files include meeting minutes, correspondence, and memos. Other files related to this committee can be found in the NIIC records.
