Biographical Note

C. Frank Wheatley, Jr. was born on January 10, 1927 in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1951 he earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland. In July of 1951 he began working for RCA on projects related to semiconductors and integrated circuits. Wheatley retired from RCA in 1987 as manager of the Rad Hard Power and Advanced Device Design group. Along with being issued 55 patents, C. Frank Wheatley, Jr. is also credited as an inventor of the insulated-gate bipolar transistor. Wheatley received the University of Maryland Centennial Medal and is a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.

Scope and Content

The C. Frank Wheatley, Jr. papers are composed of reports, articles, correspondence, and patents relating to his work on insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBT) and semiconductors at RCA. The papers also include instruction manuals and publications on power transistors and microprocessors.
