Historical Note

As part of a major reorganization in 1977, RCA Laboratories established the Materials and Components Research Division under Staff Vice-President James J. Tietjen with three new subordinate laboratories: Materials and Processing (Henry Kressel), Display Systems (Robert D. Lohman), and Energy Systems (Brown F. Williams).

Two years later, the latter two laboratories were replaced by the Manufacturing Systems and Technology Research Laboratory (later shortened to Manufacturing Systems) and the VideoDisc Systems Research Laboratory.

In 1983, the division was renamed the Manufacturing and Materials Research Division and the VideoDisc Systems Research Laboratory was replaced by the Manufacturing Technology Research Laboratory. In the same year, James J. Tietjen left to become President of RCA Americom and was replaced by Staff Vice-President James L. Miller.

Jay J. Brandinger was appointed Staff Vice-President (later Vice-President), Manufacturing and Materials Research Division in 1986 and led the division until its dissolution in 1990.

The Manufacturing and Materials Research Division conducted research in two main areas. Research in manufacturing processes and techniques initially focused on the RCA VideoDisc, but soon broadened to involve many facets of computer-aided design and computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM). The second major area was materials research, including thin films, organic materials, and electronic packaging.
