Historical Note
The Biotechnology and Materials Laboratory was formed under Satyam C. Cherukuri on January 1, 1999 as a result of the merger of Cherukuri’s Biomedical and Electronic Materials Laboratory and John L. Kulp’s Bioelectronic Systems Laboratory. The new laboratory led the Sarnoff Corporation’s research into the application of electronics to the study of biology, especially for medical purposes.
Scope and Content
This record group contains meeting minutes, reports, presentations, photographs, and videos from four Sarnoff Corporation researchers. The primary focus of the material is on the microfluidic processing chips developed by Orchid Biocomputer (formed as a partnership with SmithKline Beecham in 1995). Organs-on-Chips or Organ Chips are a manufactured environment simulating human tissues which allows for clinical testing without the use of a live subject, as an alternative to animal testing.
