Biographical Note
Oskar Eduard Heinrich Held (1904-1981) married into the du Pont family, a prominent and historically wealthy American family of French descent, known for founding the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company in 1802. The E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical research and manufacturing company more commonly referred to as the DuPont Company.
Held immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1923 and worked as a merchant in New York City. He soon moved to Rumson, New Jersey, in 1948 to become the manager of the Industrial Feeding Department for the Howard Johnson Corporation. In 1938, Held married Ethel Crofton Hunt (1902-1971), the great-great-granddaughter of Victor Marie du Pont (1767-1827), the eldest son of the company's founder.
A daughter of Victor Marie du Pont, Julia Sophie du Pont (1806-1882), married Irvine Shubrick (1797-1849); the couple had a daughter, Gabrielle Josephine Shubrick (1835-1894). Gabrielle Shubrick later married Robert Erskine Anderson Crofton (1834-1898), a Civil War veteran and later Colonel who commanded Fort Buford, North Dakota; Fort Sheridan, Illinois; Fort Bayard, New Mexico. Among their children was Mary Ethel Crofton (1876-1961), who married military officer Henry J. Hunt (1869-1935), the parents of Ethel Crofton Hunt.
Scope and Content
The collection features images related to the Crofton, du Pont, and Shubrick families between the mid-to-late nineteenth century. The collection has been organized into two series: Photographs and Albums.
The Photographs series includes portraits of notable du Pont family members, such as Samuel Francis (1803-1865), Henry Algernon (1838-1926), and Alfred Irénée (1864-1935), and Shubrick family members, including Irvine Shubrick (1797-1849), Thomas Shubrick (1825-1847), and Gabrielle Josephine Shubrick (1835-1894). This series has been arranged alphabetically by last name.
The Albums series focuses on Ethel Crofton Hunts' family's time serving in the United States military, including during the American Civil War (1861-1865) and her grandfather, Robert E.A. Crofton's, (1834-1898) command at Fort Bufford, North Dakota (1886-1891), Fort Sheridan, Illinois (1891-1896), and Fort Bayard, New Mexico (1896-1897). Not only does the collection feature personal family photograph albums owned by Robert E.A. Crofton's daughters, Mary Ethel Crofton (1876-1961) and Gabrielle Josephine Crofton (1873-1906), but also a published book of photographs of Fort Sheridan, Illinois. The daughter's albums illustrate everyday life for a young woman living at a military fortification in the late nineteenth century. This series has been arranged chronologically.
Researchers interested in genealogical, Civil War-era photography, and late nineteenth-century military installations would find this collection useful.
