Historical Note
The Centennial Exhibition of 1876 celebrated the one hundredth anniversary of American Independence. Held in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia, it was the first major U.S. world's fair. The fairgrounds were made up of several main buildings, as well as some 250 pavilions and auxiliary structures, including twenty-four state buildings, which were each designed in a regional style.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of eight photographic prints with views of the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. These include several views of industrial products inside Machinery Hall and the Main Building, the Corliss Steam Engine that sat at the center of Machinery Hall and images of fountains and plants in the Agricultural and Horticultural Halls.
