Abstract

The Hercules Powder Company was one of the companies created from the break up of the E.I. du Pont de Nemours "powder trust" in 1911 as ruled by a U.S. Supreme Court decision. In its early years as a separate company, it continued to produce explosives and dynamite and used advertising styles and devices. This item is a poster depicting a World War I soldier leaving home and telling his hunting dog, "Not this trip Old Pal."

Historical Note

The Hercules Powder Company was one of the companies created from the break up of the E.I. du Pont de Nemours "powder trust" in 1911 as ruled by a U.S. Supreme Court decision. In its early years as a separate company, it continued to produce explosives and dynamite and used advertising styles and devices, for example, advertising items at points of purchase similar to the DuPont Company.

Scope and Content

This item is a colorful advertising poster, one of at least two works done by artist A. D. Fuller for the Hercules Powder Company and printed by the Forbes Lithograph Company. The image depicts a World War I solider leaving home and telling his hunting dog, "Not this trip Old Pal." These images were used on company calendars and as advertising items at stores selling Hercules shooting powder.
