Stuart “Stu” Trott (1932-2017) was a New York advertising executive during the second half of the twentieth century, serving as Vice President and creative lead at the agencies of Benton & Bowles, Inc, and Norman, Craig & Kummel, Inc. before starting his own marketing consultancy. This collection of moving images, audio reels, slides, and ephemera document Trott’s work developing new advertising campaigns for some of the world’s best-known brands. Products advertised include Texaco gasoline, Crest toothpaste, Playtex bras, Ajax cleaning supplies, and Ziploc bags.

Historical Note
Stuart “Stu” Trott (1932-2017) was a New York advertising executive during the second half of the twentieth century. Born in Brooklyn, Trott attended Erasmus Hall High School and Cheshire Academy before receiving a B.A. in English literature from Harvard College in 1953. After graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for several years. He then returned to Harvard and was awarded his MBA from the Business School in 1958. Trott’s advertising career includes serving as Vice President/Creative Group Head at Benton & Bowles, Inc. from 1958 to 1969, and Senior Vice President/Creative Director at Norman, Craig & Kummel, Inc. from 1970 to 1979. While holding these positions, he worked with numerous major national advertisers, such as Proctor & Gamble, Texaco, Vick Chemical, and Colgate-Palmolive. Trott eventually formed his own marketing consultancy and served as President for nearly forty years.

Scope and Content
The collection contains a variety of materials accumulated by Trott over the course of his advertising career, mainly from his time at Benton & Bowles, Inc. and Norman, Craig & Kummel, Inc. There are 101 16mm films with various 30 and 60-second commercial campaigns, 72 slides from a print campaign photo shoot, five audio reels with songs, sound effects, and radio commercials, and a folder of miscellaneous realia. Products advertised include Texaco gasoline, Crest toothpaste, Playtex bras, Ajax cleaning supplies, and Ziploc bags.
