The American Meat Institute (AMI) is a large trade organization for the meat and poultry industry. Founded in 1906 as the American Meat Packers Association in Chicago. During World War II, the AMI stressed the importance of a balance diet in order to keep both civilians and servicemembers strong and healthy. The AMI produced many posters to promote their efforts. This poster shows categories of food along with how many servings is recommended daily.

Historical Note
The American Meat Institute is a large trade organization for the meat and poultry industry. Founded in 1906 as the American Meat Packers Association in Chicago. The association's first president was Thomas E. Wilson (1868-1958), an entrepreneur who established a sporting good store and a meatpacking company. In 1919 the association was reorganized as the American Meat Institute (AMI).
In 1924 the AMI began a scientific research laboratory at the University of Chicago. It became a separate entity in 1944 when AMI created the American Meat Institute Foundation to provide scientific research and education. The foundation began operations in 1947.
During World War II, the AMI stressed the importance of a balance diet in order to keep both civilians and servicemembers strong and healthy. The AMI produced many posters to promote their efforts.
The headquarters moved to Washington, D.C. in 1979. In 2015 the American Meat Institute merged with North American Meat Association and is now known as the North American Meat Institute.
Scope and Content
This poster issued by the American Meat Institute shows categories of food along with how many servings is recommended daily. The information is displayed in seven panels. The top panel, "Meat, Poultry, or Fish" shows images of beef, lamb, pork, fish, and eggs. The remaining six panels include; vegetables; milk; oranges, tomatoes, grapefruit; potatoes, apples, bananas; bread and cereal; fats and sweets. Each panel contains illustrations and descriptions of the various foods mentioned. Along the bottom of the poster it reads, "In balancing meals with meat, remember...Meat has essential B Vitamins. Proteins. Minerals."
