Historical Note
Fort DuPont was erected in 1899 and named after Admiral Samuel F. du Pont (1803-1865). It was located next to Delaware City on a spot where auxilliary shore batteries for Fort Delaware had stood since the Civil War. The fort became the headquarters for the Coastal Defense command area which included the Delaware River and Bay. In 1945 most of the facilities in this command were closed, and in 1946 Fort DuPont was transferred to the State of Delaware and became the Governor Bacon Health Center.
