She attended the Philadelphia College of Art. Upon graduation she worked as an artist creating retail advertisments before joining the DuPont Company in Wilmington, Delaware. Her early work for DuPont focused on creating commercial displays and corporate exhibits. McConaughey was a resource for DuPont's paint-related enterprises. She played an instrumental role in DuPont's Environmental Color System. Her artwork of manufacturing facilities highlighed DuPont's color palette and these paintings were used to promote DuPont's ability to "harmonize" with nature rather than contrast with it.
