The Wilson family were owners of the Wilson Line, a steamboat company that was popular for traveling between Philadelphia, Pennslyvania, Wilmington, Delaware and Riverview Beach, New Jersey. This collection contains portraits of groups and individuals, as well as snapshot of family members and their estate and documents related to Frances W. Richardson's volunteer work for hospitals and the American Red Cross.

Biographical Note
The Wilson family were owners of the Wilson Line, a steamboat company that was popular for traveling between Philadelphia, Pennslyvania, Wilmington, Delaware and Riverview Beach, New Jersey. Captain Horace Wilson (1862-1938) established the company as the Wilmington Steamboat Company in 1882. Throughout the years several ships were added most notably, two identical ships the "State of Delaware" and the "State of Pennsylvania" were added in 1923. The family sold the company in 1929 to a syndicate of Wilmington & Philadelphia interests.
Horace Wilson served as Mayor of Wilmington from 1905 to 1907. He and his wife, Rosella F. Wilson (1863-1924) had two daughters and a son: Elizabeth Wilson Murphy (1892-1974), R. Frances Wilson Richardson (1895-1981), and Joseph Shields Wilson Jr. (1888-1967). Joseph Shields Jr. attended Cornell University graduated in 1909 with a degree in Engineering. He joined his father as owner of the Wilson Steamboat Company and also went on to become the Mayor of Wilmington from 1947 to 1949.
Scope and Content
This collection contains portraits of groups and individuals, as well as snapshot of family members and their estate. There is a portrait of Joseph S. Wilson and one of his father, Horace Wilson in front of a cathedral in Copenhagen. Additionally there are several documents of Frances W. Richardson's related to her volunteer work for the American Red Cross during World War II and her work at hospitals in the 1970s.
