Historical Note

The National Railroad Passenger Corporation, Amtrak, is a passenger rail service in the United States. With the passing of the Rail Passenger Service Act in 1970 to help the declining passenger train industry, Amtrak was able to begin service on May 1, 1971. Amtrak commenced with 326 locomotives and 1,275 passenger cars. Today Amtrak operates more than 300 trains a day and transports roughly 20 to 30 million passengers a year.

Scope and Content

This item is a standard twelve-month calendar, with an image on the top portion of each month. The calendar was designed to highlight Amtrak trains all over its operating system. The twelve images include: [1] Train #48, eastbound Lake Shore Limited along the Hudson River. [2] Swedish built X2000 on Hell Gate Bridge. [3] Train #58, northbound Panama Limited in Chicago. [4] Train #169 southbound Mayflower. [5] Train #371 westbound Black Hawk. [6] Train #627 Heritage, "Clocker" service. [7] Train #9 in the North Coast Hiawatha. [8] Train #572 Santa Fe's "Surfline." [9] Train #3 Southwest Limited. [10] Train #8 The Empire Builder in Grizzly, Montana. [11] F69's bracket Electro-Motives' test car #840 in Chicago-Milwaukee Hiawatha service.
