Abstract

DuPont American Industries was formed in 1918 as a holding of the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company in order to purchase a substantial portion of General Motors and Chevrolet stock. This item is a portrait of a large group of male employees of DuPont American Industries.

Historical Note

DuPont American Industries was formed in 1918 as a holding of the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company in order to purchase a substantial portion of General Motors and Chevrolet stock. General Motors was struggling and this investment helped keep the company afloat. In 1920, the DuPont Company president Pierre S. du Pont was elected president of General Motors. In 1957 DuPont divested its shares of General Motors due to an antitrust lawsuit.

Scope and Content

Portrait of a large group of male employees of DuPont American Industries (company name adopted during World War I). Several DuPont Company executives, such as Pierre S. du Pont, Irénée du Pont, and R.R.M. Carpenter are on the stage. Room is draped in American flags and many of the employees are holding their straw hats. There is a large model of the DuPont Perpetual Calendar, which was issued in 1917.
