Historical Note

E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont company. The company was established in 1802 by Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) and his son Éleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834) the company began with the production of gunpowder. The du Pont’s purchased a mill site on the banks of the Brandywine River just North of Wilmington, Delaware. During wartime the company was a major supplier for the United States government. During peacetime, the company marketed their product towards sportsmen and hunters. Throughout the 1900s and 1910s, the company shifted its focus away from gunpowder production and towards chemistry innovations. By 1926 the company officially dissolved the powder production unit, although it had already been inactive for many years.

DuPont broke ground on the Louviers Building, located near Newark, Delaware, in June 1951, and the H-shaped building was occupied by the Engineering Department beginning in August 1952. Designed to accomodate expansion, additional wings were added in 1957 (Wing 4) and 1974 (Wing 5).

Scope and Content

This collection consists mostly of photographs of DuPont's Louviers office building. There are some photographs showing the Engineering Department's move from Wilmington to the Louviers Building in August 1952 and a number of photographs of an open house at Louviers around the same time. Some color prints from the 1970s and 1980s may also show the Engineering Department at Louviers, though these photographs are not clearly identified.

The collection also contains a number of safety-related photos taken at DuPont's Spruance Plant and Sabine River Plant in the 1960s, photographs of employees at several DuPont Ordnance plants during World War II, and a few color photographs of an unidentified textile fibers or plastics plant from the 1970s and 1980s.
