Abstract

Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS), now known as Landsat 1, was the first satellite launched as part of the Landsat program to continuously record observations of Earth from space. ERTS was launched on July 23, 1972. This small collection consists of eleven transparencies showing satellite images of locations in the southwestern United States and Rocky Mountains taken by NASA's Earth Resources Technology Satellite on February 2, 1975.

Historical Note

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is a United States government agency responsible for the civilian space program as well as aeronautics and aerospace research. Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS), now known as Landsat 1, was the first satellite launched as part of the Landsat program to continuously record observations of Earth from space. ERTS was launched on July 23, 1972. The satellite captures vital information on the use and changes of geology, forestry, agriculture, and oceanography. The data and images are used by civilians, government, scientists, educational, commercial, and industrial communities for planning and conservation.

Scope and Content

This small collection consists of eleven transparencies showing satellite images of locations in the southwestern United States and Rocky Mountains taken by NASA's Earth Resources Technology Satellite on February 2, 1975. Locations appear to be unpopulated and are marked with latitude and longitude coordinates. There is also one photographic print of sunspots labeled "Project Stratoscope flight of August 17, 1959."

Found in stacks in Soda House. Originally labeled "Max Mesmer Collection," indicating material may have been gifted by Max Mesmer or a relative, but no provenance information has been found to confirm this.
