Abstract

The York Safe and Lock Company manufactured safes and vaults. The firm was established in 1882 in York, Pennsylvania, by Israel Laucks (1827-1918). This small collection consists of five photographs of bank vault doors built by the York Safe & Lock Co. of York, Pennsylvania, in around 1935.

Historical Note

The York Safe and Lock Company manufactured safes and vaults. The firm was established in 1882 in York, Pennsylvania, by Israel Laucks (1827-1918). Laucks' son, S. Forry Laucks (1870-1942), took over the business in 1891. The York Safe and Lock Company began construction of large elaborate vaults in the early 1900s; during World War II, it was involved in the production of firearms and other weapons.

Scope and Contents

Three photographs of a 10" bank vault door (opened and closed), built by the York Safe & Lock Co. of York, Pennsylvania, installed at the National City Bank in New York City. Two photographs of a 12" circular bank vault door (opened and closed), also built by the York Safe & Lock Co., installed at the First National Bank in Philadelphia. The First National Bank photographs are stamped on the back: "Joseph F. Kane, York Safe & Lock Co., 711 Chestnut St., Philadelphia, Pa."
