Biographical Note

Karen du Pont Farquhar (1947-) is the great-granddaughter of T. Coleman du Pont, president of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company in the early twentieth century. She inherited a small group of family papers and photographs from the Victor Marie du Pont branch of the du Pont family. The collection represents three generations: Victor du Pont (1828-1888) and his wife, Alice Hounsfield du Pont (1833-1904) and their children; T. Coleman du Pont (1863-1930) and his wife, Alice du Pont (1863-1937) and their children; and Clayton Douglass Buck (1890-1965) and his wife, Alice Hounsfield du Pont Wilson-Buck (1891-1967), and their children.

Scope and Content

This collection of photographs is part of a larger group of du Pont family papers donated by Karen du Pont Farquhar. Two boxes of letters and artifacts are housed in the Manuscripts and Archives Department. The photograph collection includes many photographs of Sophie du Pont and Renee de Pelleport du Pont, daughters of Victor du Pont and Alice Hounsfield du Pont, as children and young women, as well as their sister Alice with her husband, T. Coleman, and their children, Alice Hounsfield, Ellen Coleman, and Francis Victor. Also pictured are Samuel Francis du Pont (1865-1893), Mary Van Dyke du Pont, Ethel du Pont Barksdale, Hamilton Barksdale, and other friends of the family. This collection also includes many snapshots, photograph albums, and formal portraits of Alice Hounsfield du Pont Wilson-Buck (daughter of Alice and T. Coleman du Pont) and her friends and family, especially her daughter, Dorcas Van Dyke Buck. Of particular note are several photo albums of snapshots taken between 1936 and 1945 that show Dorcas with her parents, brother, Clayton Douglass Jr., and friends at the family home, Buena Vista. There is also a du Pont family tree that traces du Pont lineage back from Alice du Pont and T. Coleman du Pont.
