Abstract

Carolyn Mann Irving (1891-1987) was the wife of Evelyn du Pont Irving (1886-1968), nephew and one of the heirs of the prominent author Washington Irving's estate. The collection consists of forty-two prints (engravings or lithographs) and two photographic prints which were collected by Carolyn M. Irving. Subjects include animals; Andrew Jackson political cartoons; battle and war images; du Pont related images; European landscapes, town scenes and cathedrals; fashion and religious images.

Biographical Note

Carolyn Mann Irving (1891-1987) was the wife of Evelyn du Pont Irving (1886-1968), nephew and one of the heirs of the prominent author Washington Irving's estate. Carolyn Patchin Mann was born in Troy, New York to Francis Norton Mann (1849-1912) and Jessie Melville Patchin (1854-1946). She and Evelyn du Pont Irving were married in 1916 and had three sons. Evelyn Dupont Irving was an investor in Wall Street for three decades, upon his retirement they lived at his family estate in Montchanin, Delaware.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of forty-two prints (engravings or lithographs) and two photographic prints which were collected by Carolyn M. Irving. Subjects include animals; Andrew Jackson political cartoons; battle and war images; du Pont related images; European landscapes, town scenes and cathedrals; fashion and religious images.

A bulk of the collection are nineteenth century lithographs of European landscapes, town scenes and cathedrals. The animal images are mostly birds and one image of antelopes. There are three anti-Andrew Jackson political caricatures. The du Pont related images includes a portrait engraving of Eleuthere I. du Pont by John Sartain, based on Rembrandt Peale painting; a lithograph of Camp du Pont, 1863 Civil War encampment to protect Du Pont powder yards near Wilmington, Delaware; and two photographs of Eleutherian Mills. The fashion lithographs are two American fashion prints, two prints showing Peruvian costumes and two prints showing Macedonian costumes. There are two etchings related to the Battle of Edgehill, which was the first main battle of the English Civil War, fought on October 23, 1642. There is also a depiction of Pocahontas and Captain Smith, and a poster from World War I.

Condition Note

Many of the prints have sustained water damage and foxing. These stains do not affect the integrity of the image.
