Biographical / Historical

The Lawrance Engineering and Research Corporation manufactured auxiliary power plants for airplanes. The firm was founded in 1930 in Linden, New Jersey, by aviator Charles L. Lawrance (1882-1950). Lawrance pioneered the construction of air-cooled engines for airplanes. He invented the engine that powered Charles Lindberg's (1902-1974) "Spirit of St. Louis" in its transatlantic flight in 1927.

The Lawrance Engineering and Research Corporation was involved in engine development in the 1930s and 1940s. Among other products, they developed auxiliary power units for aircraft, including some driven by horizontally opposed engines.

Please note: "Lawrance" is spelled correctly here; often, his and the firm names are misspelled with an "e" instead of the second "a."
