Abstract

The New Castle County Mutual Insurance Company was incorporated on February 6, 1849, as a mutual fire insurance company in Wilmington, Delaware. It was later renamed the New Castle Mutual Insurance Company. This small collection consists of seven portrait photographs of presidents and vice presidents of the New Castle County Mutual Insurance Company dating from around 1849 to 1912.

Historical Note

The New Castle County Mutual Insurance Company was incorporated on February 6, 1849, as a mutual fire insurance company in Wilmington, Delaware. Its first president was James Canby (1781-1858). It was later renamed the New Castle Mutual Insurance Company. On June 15, 1962, it absorbed the Kent County Mutual Insurance Company by merger. The latter firm had been incorporated in February 1847, with Samuel M. Harrington (1803-1828) as president.

Scope and Contents

This small collection consists of seven portrait photographs of presidents and vice presidents of the New Castle County Mutual Insurance Company. Included are Edward T. Bellah, president, 1897-1899; Edward Bringhurst, Jr., vice president, 1900-1912; James Canby, president, 1849-1852; William Canby, president, 1857-1870 and 1885-1897; Mark M. Cleaver, president, 1900-1907; George Richardson, vice president, 1885-1888; and William Tatnall, president, 1870-1885. Several of the portraits are crayon enlargements.

Also includes a photograph of the front of the New Castle County Mutual Insurance building, "built by Mr. Calvin I. Swayne," on Market Street in Wilmington, Delaware. Also, a photograph of an article from the Wilmington Evening Journal from December 13, 1965, showing buildings in the 600 block of Market Street, Wilmington, Delaware, including the New Castle County Mutual Insurance building.
