Historical Note
The Seagram Company was one of the world's largest alcoholic beverage firms. German-born architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) designed the Seagram Building, which was completed in 1958. Designed according to the minimalist principles of International Style, the Seagram Building was built of glass and metal, foregoing the stone and brick ornamental facades of preceding buildings. This design marked a new era for the American skyscraper where functionality dictated design. Another revolutionary aspect of the Seagram Building was addition of the public plaza with its two reflecting pools and marble benches.
