Historical Note
Hoopes Brothers & Darlington began in West Chester in 1867 manufacturing wooden spokes for wheels. By the eighteen-eighties it was one of the largest wooden wheel makers in the country. It remained in business long after other wheel factories had closed, selling wooden wheels to the Amish and as decorative items. In 1969 the Smithsonian Institution and Hagley documented the soon-to-be-closed factory, taking photographs and producing a short documentary film (ACC. 1971.269) on the facility.
