Historical Note
H. Ledyard Towle (1890-1973) was a commercial artist, portrait painter, and color consultant to various industries. He served as a camouflage expert and artist during World War I attaining the rank of captain. The war expanded his view of art as conveyed in this quote: “I went into war thinking that art belonged to the chosen few, but I came out knowing that beauty belonged to every urchin in the street. Working on war-time camouflage problems taught me how to use color with a purpose. I saw the futility of painting portraits to collect dust in museums, and turned to camouflaging industry and its products of everyday life.” After the war, he became the chairman of DuPont’s Duco Color Advisory Service. In the 1930’s he went on to become art director for Campbell-Ewald in Detroit, and in 1934 he took the position of director of the Division of Creative Design and Color at Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company. Throughout his career, he published and lectured about the use of color in design.
