Historical Note
Henry A. Weldy and members of the Shindel family purchased the small Huhn Powder mill outside Tamaqua, Pennsylvania on the banks of the Little Schuylkill River. They operated it as the H. A. Weldy Powder Company. After an explosion in 1871, E.I. du Pont De Nemours and Company purchased the Shindels' interest in the mill, which also gave them control. Weldy, however, proved a capable manager and the mill grew under his leadership. In 1906, several years after Weldy’s retirement, another explosion took place, but the plant was not rebuilt. Two years later, workers dismantled what remained of the H. A. Weldy Powder Company, and the real estate was sold to the Anthracite Water Company. The land is now owned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
