Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1921-1994) was a descendant of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) who founded the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company with his son Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834) in 1802. E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont company. This collection consists of graphic materials including a photographic print of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1921-1994), booklets, a copy of a photographic print of Johan Andreas Philip Ludwig (1753-1803), the Ludwig family crest and a genealogy of the Pelleport family.

Biographical Note
Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1921-1994) was a descendant of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) who founded the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company with his son Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834) in 1802. E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont company. The du Pont’s purchased a mill site on the banks of the Brandywine River just North of Wilmington, Delaware.
In 1794, Gabrielle Josephine de La Fite de Pelleport (1770-1837), the daughter of the Marquis de Pelleport, married Victor Marie du Pont (1767-1827) the eldest son of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) and came with him to America in 1797. Her father was in service of the Comte d'Artois, brother of Louis XVI, and at the Abbaye de Port Royal in Paris.
Johann Andreas Philip Ludwig (1753-1803) came to America in 1777 from Germany, as one of the officers of the Auspach-Baireuth Regiment of Yagers. Ludwig served through the Revolutionary War and received an honorary discharge at its termination. He settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1783 and anglicized his name to Lewis.
Scope and Content
This collection contains a small photographic portrait of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1921-1994) as a child. Also included are two family New Years calling gift booklets, "Brandywine nostalgia" (1965) and "Saint Amour" (1972) and a copy of a portrait of Johan Andreas Philip Ludwig (1753-1803), with "Dining room chairs" written on back. Additionally, there is a copy of the Ludwig family crest and a published Pelleport family genealogy.
