Historical Note

Eileen Gray (1878-1976) is considered one of the most important and influential furniture designers and architects of the early twentieth century, inspiring both modernism and Art Deco movements. She was among the vanguard of the International Style in her use and interpretation of geometric forms and industrially produced materials. Her most famous and iconic examples of this are the Bibendum Chair, made of steel tubing and leather, as well as the E-1027 glass and tubular steel table. She made significant contributions to architecture when she designed two houses in the Alpes Maritimes at Ruquebrune and Castellar. Her artistic career began in painting at the Slade School of Art, and through apprenticeship continued in lacquer work, of which she became a leading designer. Eileen Gray was born in Ireland, grew up in London, and lived most of her adult life in Paris.
