Abstract

The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was the first common carrier railroad in the nation began operating in 1827. It spanned as far north as New York and as far west as St. Louis and Chicago. This is a small collection of souvenir postcards that were published for the The Fair of the Iron Horse, Baltimore and Ohio Railroad's centenary exhibition and pageant of 1927. It was held near Baltimore, Maryland.

Historical Note

The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was the first common carrier railroad in the nation began operating in 1827. It spanned as far north as New York and as far west as St. Louis and Chicago. When it turned 100 in 1927, it decided to celebrate its centenary with an exhibition and pageant called the Fair of the Iron Horse in September and October of that year. A collection of historic B&O locomotives was put on display as well as exhibits about railroading. B&O put on an elaborate pageant about the history of inland transportation in the United States. Approximately 1.5 million people came to the Fair of the Iron Horse during its three-week run.

Scope and Content

This is a small collection of souvenir postcards that were published for the The Fair of the Iron Horse, Baltimore and Ohio Railroad's centenary exhibition and pageant of 1927; it was held near Baltimore, Maryland. Each postcard has a photographic image of a significant B&O locomotive and its name and date. There is also a short description of the locomotive. Cards were produced with the following: Lafayette (1837); Tom Thumb (1829); York (1831); Atlantic (1832); Thomas Jefferson (1835); B&O 55 (1839); Memnon 57 (1848); B&O 25 (1856); B&O 117 (1863); B&O 600 (1875); B&O 4317 Mikado-type (1913); B&O 7303 Mallet-type (1917); B&O 6100 Santa Fe-type (1923); B&O "Lord Baltimore" Mountain-type (1925); B&O "President Washington" President-type (1927).
