It also furnished a platform to showcase a revitalized San Francisco that had been devastated by the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906. The fair grounds were built on over 600 acres of filled-in marshland, which is now known as the Marina District. Exhibit halls were built by 31 nations and many U.S. states. Close to 19 million people attended the fair to take in exhibits on the arts, industry, agriculture, and invention. The exposition was a great success and an economic boon for San Francisco.
