Historical Note

Marguerite du Pont Lee (1862-1936) was a descendant of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) who founded the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company with his son Eleuthere Irenee du Pont (1771-1834) in 1802. The E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont Company.

Lee was the granddaughter of Alfred Victor du Pont (1798-1856) and Margaretta Elizabeth Lammot du Pont (1807-1898), and the daughter of E.I. du Pont II (1829-1877) and Charlotte Henderson du Pont (1825-1877). Her four siblings were: Anna Cazenove du Pont (1860-1899), Alfred Irenee du Pont (1864-1935), Maurice du Pont (1866-1941) and Louis Cazenove du Pont (1868-1892).

Scope and Content

This small collection consists of four items belonging to Marguerite du Pont Lee. Photographs include a portrait of Lee as a young woman, a portrait of her youngest brother Louis Cazenove du Pont at age five, and an image of a gate for her brother Alfred I. du Pont designed or fabricated by Stewart & Donohue.

The forth item is a framed oak leaf woven with initials of seven women. According to the inscription on the back of the frame the leaf was made by Eleuthere "E.I." Irenee du Pont (1771-1834) for his daughter-in-law Margaretta Elizabeth Lammot du Pont. The initials include Margaretta's, her two sisters Mary Augusta Lammot (1811-1905) and Eleonora "Nora" Adelaide Lammot(1813-1874), E.I. du Pont’s daughters Sophie Madeleine du Pont Du Pont (1810-1888) and Eleuthera du Pont Smith (1806-1876), and two close family friends, Elizabeth "Eliza" Julia Schlatter (1809-1892) and Mary "Polly" Elizabeth Simmons (1808-1879). Marguerite inherited the leaf from her father's estate.
