Historical Note
The Wilmington Shops were preceded by the first DuPont Company machine shop facilities on the Brandywine River. In the twentieth century, DuPont Company acquired the J. Morton Poole Shops in 1915 and the Betts Machine Company in 1917. The latter company's plant on Maryland Avenue in Wilmington became the Betts Shops of DuPont and was renamed the Wilmington Shops in 1923. It continued to operate into the 1980s.
Scope and Content
This is a collection of photographs from the DuPont's Company Wilmington Shops, a large machine shop that produced specialized equipment which was used in DuPont Company plants. A few of the images show the interior of the shops, but the majority picture individual machines (for example, tube drawing machine; roll corning mill; spinning machine; drawing machine; powder packing machine; cutting machine; gelatin packing machine; cake ringing machine; crystallizing kettle; horizontal mixer; paraffining machine; spinning machines; dynamite mixing machines) that were made for specific operations. Many of the photographs are identified and dated and some indicate for which DuPont Company plant the machine was being created.
