Historical Note
The Chisholm Bros. was a publishing company that produced railway, travel and tourists guides, and souvier albums which depicted routes of travel. The Chisholm Bros. was formed in 1861, by Hugh J. Chishom (1847-1912) in partnership with his brothers in Portland, Maine. The company specialized in lithography and produced hundreds of view albums showing scenery along the principal railroads of the United States.
Mauch Chunk, now known as Jim Thorpe, is a town in eastern Pennsylvania founded in 1818 and was a railroad and coal-shipping center in the nineteenth century.
Scope and Content
A hard cover souvenir with eighteen views of sights in Mauch Chunk, the "Switzerland of America." Images are on twelve unpaginated folded panels. Title stamped in gilt on front cover. The subjects include identified scenic views, railroad cars and passengers on the inclined planes, and multiple views of Mauch Chunk. There are views of the Lehigh Valley Railroad depot and the Mt. Pisgah plane among others. Some of these views may be reproduced from William Herman Rau photographs. Souvenir published by Chisolm Brothers, Portland, Maine.
