Abstract

Richards, London & Kelley manufactured pattern-making machinery for woodworking. The firm founded, The Atlantic Works in 1869 for the manufacture of machines especially directed to railway car manufacturing, and Band Sawing Machinery. This collection consists of illustrations of woodworking machinery and descriptions from trade catalogs that are pasted into an album. The machinery was produced in Philadelphia by The Atlantic Works (also DBA Richards, London and Kelley).

Historical Note

Richards, London & Kelley manufactured pattern-making machinery for woodworking. The firm founded, The Atlantic Works in 1869 for the manufacture of machines especially directed to railway car manufacturing, and Band Sawing Machinery. The company underwent a variety of partnerships and names. It was Richards, London & Kelley from July 1871 through July 1877, previously it was Richards, Thorne & Co. (1969-July 1870) and Richards, Kelly & Co. (July 1870-July 1871).

John Richards was an author and inventor originally from Columbus, Ohio and later moved his business to Philadelphia. Richards partners were W.S. Kelley and W.E. London. By 1877, Richards and Kelley were bought out and Richards was living in England.

Scope and Content

Collection consists of illustrations of woodworking machinery and descriptions from trade catalogs that are pasted into an album. The machinery was produced in Philadelphia by The Atlantic Works (also DBA Richards, London and Kelley). There are drawings and photographs of the following kinds of machines: band saws, crosscut saws, cross-graining and rebating, drilling and boring, jig saws, jobbing, lathes, mortising, planing, resawing, saw benches, tenoning. The prices for most of these are handwritten. There is also notation indicating which machines are in the Philadelphia Navy Yard.
