Scope and Content
The collection consists of photographs of Irene Carpenter Draper, as a child and as a young adult, and her extended family. A large number of the photographs are of Margaretta du Pont and her siblings, the children of Mary Belin and Lammot du Pont. These include snapshots of them as children at their home on Powelton Avenue in Philadelphia, as young adults in various places, such as at St. Amour in Wilmington, Delaware, and as married adults with children. One of the albums in the collection belonged to Margaretta du Pont, circa 1903, and contains photographs of a trip to the beach; a trip to San Antonio, Mexico, and other places; and other recreational and leisure activities such as horseback riding, golfing, tennis, and picnicking. In addition to the snapshots, there are numerous portraits of them and their children at various ages, particularly the children of Margaretta du Pont Carpenter, Mary du Pont Laird and Isabella du Pont Sharp. There are also a few group portraits of Lammot du Pont, Irénée du Pont, and P.S. du Pont standing under a portrait of their father, Lammot du Pont, at the DuPont Company offices. In this same group of photos is a portrait of them with Crawford Greenewalt and Walter S. Carpenter Jr.
There are also a large number of photographs, predominantly portraits, of R.R.M. Carpenter and his family. Three albums in the collection contain cabinet photographs, cartes de visite photographs, and other portraits of the Carpenter, du Pont and related families. The collection also contains miscellaneous scenic views of rivers, waterfalls, and bridges; a group portrait of the World War I Executive Committee of the DuPont Company; a visiting card for "Mr. & Mrs. R.R. Morgan"; and a fan decorated with cyanotype photographs of Margaretta du Pont and her siblings and friends on one side, and cut-out scraps on the other side.
