Historical Note
The Delaware, Lackawanna & Western (DL&W) Railroad was one of the largest and most prosperous anthracite transporting and mining companies in Pennsylvania. The DL&W had a particular market advantage in that it directly operated coal mines beginning in 1851 when its Coal Department was organized. Many years and many fortunes later, after the U.S. government successfully prosecuted other anthracite railroads for antitrust violations, the DL&W voluntarily divested itself of its Coal Department. It then became the Glen Alden Coal Company in 1921.
Scope and Content
This collection consists of dated and undated views of a boiler, breakers, collieries, fan houses, hoist, mule barns, pumps, shafts, steam plant, tunnels and an electric power plant in the anthracite mining areas in Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties of eastern Pennsylvania. These were all properties of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad Company's Coal Department. The ten identified breakers are: Archibald, Bliss, Brisbin, Continental, Diamond, Hampton, Holden, Loomis, Pyne, Sloan, Taylor, Truesdale, and Woodward. There are also two images (exterior and interior) from the Storr's Mine wash house. Most of the views are exteriors devoid of workers. Twelve of the photographs include a photo credit, "Bunnell." W. B. Bunnell was the official photographer of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad.
