Biographical Note
Janet Starr Whitson Sudler (1908-1994) and Arthur Emory Sudler Jr. (1905-1968) were a commercial artist couple who married in 1927.
Janet Starr Whitson was born at Fort Sam in Houston, Texas, to Mary C. Firey Whitson (1877-1949) and Kaolin L. Whitson (1875-1911). Her father was a lieutenant in the army and died of malaria while stationed in the Philippines. She graduated from Western High School in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1925.
Arthur Emory Sudler was born in Baltimore, Maryland, to Louisa Painter Gilpin (1873-1962) and Arthur Emory Sudler Sr. (1872-1925). He attended Baltimore City College.
Whitson and Sudler studied art at the Maryland Institute, College of Art. They married in 1927 and had one daughter, Mary Gail Sudler (1933-2010), who married Thomas Rhodes Rockwell (1933-1978) in 1955.
Upon graduation, Sudler became art director for E.R. Squibb & Sons, a New York drug company. In 1936, Sudler left and founded his own advertising agency with Matthew "Matt" J. Hennessey (1916-2011). The firm, Sudler & Hennessey, began as a general market agency and became known for creating the NBC peacock logo and Dr. Brown's soda marketing. Eventually, Sudler & Hennessey emerged as the leading healthcare marketing agency. Young and Rubicon acquired Sudler & Hennessey in 1973; it was rolled into VMLY&R in 2018 (Valentine McCormick Ligibel). In 2023, Wunder Thompson merged with VMLY&R into a new agency, VML, which is a subsidiary of the parent company, WPP plc, a British multinational communications, advertising, public relations, technology, and commerce holding company headquartered in London.
The artwork of Whitson and Sudler was widely known during their time. Sudler's work was included in private collections and held at the Whitney Museum. Their daughter went on to become an artist and illustrator as well.
Scope and Contents
This small collection consists of sketches and advertisements, primarily of women's millinery and fashion from the 1930s in flapper-era style. The advertisements include: Varsity Club Hats; Innovation Trunks/Luggage; Phelps Fashions, Inc.; Hickson, Inc.; Grande Maison de Blanc, Inc.; Maison Burano; McLaughlin Town and Country Clothes; Maurice Mendel, Inc.; and Artworth Company, Inc.
Most of the advertisements are signed "Sudler," and therefore it cannot be determined if they are the work of Arthur Sudler or Janet Whitson Sudler. One is signed "JS" and another is signed "Whitson;" therefore, these are definitely works by Janet Whitson Sudler.
