Kurz & Allison was a major publisher of chromolithographs during the late nineteenth century. Between 1887 and 1893, the firm published thirty-six battle scenes of the Civil War. This chromolithograph depicts Union General George B. McClellan at the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862.

Historical Note
Kurz & Allison was a major publisher of chromolithographs during the late nineteenth century. Louis Kurz (1835–1921) and Alexander Allison (dates unknown) formed a partnership in 1880; it dissolved in 1903. The firm's office was located on Wabash Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. It built its reputation by publishing large prints depicting battles of the American Civil War.
Between 1887 and 1893, Kurz & Allison published thirty-six Civil War battle scenes. Kurz continued to produce prints under his own name until 1911.
Scope and Contents
This chromolithograph depicts Union General George B. McClellan at the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. There are Union and Confederate soldiers in battle along the edge of a river as Union forces overrun a bridge. Smoke billows from cannons that fire into the lines.
The text in the bottom right margin reads: "Copyrighted 1888 by Kurz & Allison Art Publishers, 76 & 78 Wabash Ave., Chicago, U.S.A."
The text in the bottom left margin reads: "Army of the Potomac: Gen. Geo. B. McClellan, Comm., Sept. 17' 1862. - 1' 2' 4' 6' 9' 12' Corps & Pleasanton's Cav. Div. Engaged."
