Historical Note

Ingersoll-Rand Company is a provider of industrial equipment. Its main products are compressors, blowers, and pumps. The company was founded in 1871 as the Ingersoll Rock Drill Company by inventor Simon Ingersoll (1818-1894), who designed and patented the steam-powered percussion rock drill. In 1888, it merged with Sergeant Drill to form Ingersoll Sergeant Drill Company in Manhattan. In 1903, the first factory in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, opened and in 1905, Ingersoll-Sergeant Drill Co. merged with Rand Drill Co. to form Ingersoll-Rand.

Adam Scott Cameron (1820-1877) founded A.S. Cameron Steam Pump Works in 1860 to manufacture crank and flywheel dry vacumm pumps. Ingersoll-Rand purchased A.S. Cameron Steam Pump Works in 1909 and created the Cameron Pump Division located at the Phillipsburg plant.

In 2019, the Ingersoll-Rand industrial segment was acquired by Gardner Denver Company, a major supplier of compressors, blowers, and vacuum pumps.

Scope and Contents

This small collection consists of a disparate assortment of brochures, booklets, manuals, correspondence, directories, and photographs that belonged to Edward H. Fry (1915-1985), the supervising engineer for the Cameron Pump division at the Phillipsburg Plant. The materials date from 1936 to 1979 and have been arranged in chronological order.

There are a large number of telephone directories, mainly for the Phillipsburg Plant, but several for the Easton Plant as well. Images include views of pumps, installation and disassembly, a set of facilities and operation views with captions, and several years of the annual employee outing.

There is some documentation regarding Fry's role as a supervisor, such as conference program materials on management, a planner, a Cameron Service Manual, correspondence, and photographs from visiting groups.

Additionally, there are company brochures, a Phillipsburg Plant 50th anniversary booklet, and company program booklets.
