Historical Note

Delmarva Power and Light Company is a regulated energy company that provides electricity and natural gas services to customers in the Delmarva Peninsula. The company was founded in 1909 as Delaware Power & Light; however, its beginnings can be traced to the 1880s when a number of small power companies sprang up to provide electric service to the Delmarva Peninsula. Such companies continued to appear over the next two decades, including Wilmington City Electric, Delaware Electric Company, Tasley Ice Company, the Phoenix Company, and Wilmington Light and Telephone Company. All of these small providers had either folded or consolidated by 1928 into two large companies--Delaware Power and Light, headquartered in Wilmington, and Eastern Shore Gas and Electric, which controlled power on the lower Delmarva Peninsula. These two companies merged in 1943. In 1966, the utility changed its name to Delmarva Power and Light Company.

Conectiv, Inc. is a holding company formed in 1998 by the merger of Atlantic Electric Incorporated and Delmarva Power and Light Company, two large regional power utilities that supplied southern New Jersey and the Delmarva Peninsula. In 2002, Potomac Electric Power Company (Pepco) acquired Conectiv, Inc. and created Pepco Holdings, Inc., a holding company that owned both Conectiv and Delmarva Power and Light.

Today, Delmarva Power and Light and Pepco are subsidiaries of the Exelon Company; Conectiv Energy is a subsidiary of the Calpine Corporation.

Scope and Contents

This is a small collection of Brown's papers from her time as vice president at the Delmarva Power and Light Company and Conectiv, Inc. Most of the files are from Delmarva Power and Light Company, primarily original images from their employee newsletter. There are also many booklets about power-generating stations from various utility companies.

The collection is arranged in three series: Delmarva Power and Light Company files; Conectiv files; and Electric industry trade publications.

The Delmarva Power and Light Company files series is arranged in three subseries: General files, "Current News: For Delmarva Power Employees" newsletter photographs, and Delmarva Employee Association files. All subseries have been organized chronologically.

The General files subseries consists of company histories and photographs. The images are of plant exteriors and interiors, such as the control room, employees working, holiday parties, playing sports, and the company picnic.

The "Current News: For Delmarva Power Employees" newsletter photographs subseries consists of original images used in the employee newsletter. The subseries includes three issues, one of which is only a few pages from the newsletter. The existing pictures are sometimes from the monthly newsletters' feature story; in these instances, the topic is supplied as the title. Most newsletters include promotions and service anniversary announcements alongside an individual employee portrait. The people pictured are identified on the backs of the images, and this information has been included in the description when available.

The Delmarva Employee Association files subseries consists of the association newsletter, "Spark 'N Flame"; many issues date from 1968 to 1980, although it is not a complete run. There are photographs from an association picnic, which included family members. The photographs show children's games, clowns, balloons, pie-eating contests, baseball, and food tents.

The Conectiv files series consists of articles about the Delmarva Power and Light Company and Atlantic Energy merger, a couple of photographs of Conectiv facilities, a green energy proposal, a set of company history video scripts, and the videos. The materials date from 1998 to 2000.

The Electric industry trade publications series consists primarily of booklets by utility companies providing general design information about various substations. Most of the utility companies represented are in the Mid-Atlantic states; others include Ohio, Massachusetts, Vermont, North Carolina, and Alabama. Some booklets provide company historical information or descriptions of equipment. One set of materials from the Delaware Power & Light Company, consisting of photographs, brochures, booklets, and articles, was removed from a binder for preservation purposes. These materials date from 1892 to 1893 and 1928 to 2002. They have been organized alphabetically by utility company name.
