The American Insulation Company was a manufacturer of asbestos tape, tubing, gloves, and other asbestos products. The company was founded in 1914 by John W. Latchum (1884-1953) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Beginning in the 1920s, it began manufacturing its patented and trademarked product, "Eternit" Asbestos Shingles. This album of photographs consists of exterior views of buildings, mostly residential homes, showcasing the new roofs. The captions of each image list the city, state, name of the head of residence or builder, color/type of shingle method used, and a brief sentence about the choice of roof color for the type of house. The estimated date range of the images is from the 1940s; however, it is possible that some date to a bit earlier or later.

Historical Note
The American Insulation Company was a manufacturer of asbestos tape, tubing, gloves, and other asbestos products. The company was founded in 1914 by John W. Latchum (1884-1953) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There was also a plant in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Beginning in the 1920s, the company began manufacturing its patented and trademarked product, "Eternit" Asbestos Shingles. Made from Portland Cement and South African Asbestos Fibre, the shingles were marketed as fire-proof. The company was not a roofing company; contractors, builders, and repairmen sold its shingles.
The company dissolved in the early 1980s.
Scope and Contents
This album of photographs consists of exterior views of buildings, mostly residential homes, showcasing the new roofs. The residential homes pictured were located in Nashville, Tennessee; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; New Orleans, Louisiana; Louisville, Kentucky; and the greater Philadelphia area, Pennsylvania. There are also two images of the Royal Poinciana Hotel in Palm Beach, Florida, one of which is a close-up view of workers. There is a view of Atlantic Coast Line Railroad shops in Montgomery, Alabama; a U.S. Government Isolation Hospital in New Bedford, Massachusetts; and two rural estate buildings, one in North Branch, New Jersey, and another in Greene, New York.
