Abstract

General Railway Signal Company supplied railway signaling equipment, systems, and services. In 1904, it was formed by the merger of three companies and was headquartered in Rochester, New York. This small collection of photographs showcases the company's work installing centralized traffic control systems, light signals, and car retarder systems.

Historical Note

General Railway Signal Company supplied railway signaling equipment, systems, and services. In 1904, it was formed by merging three companies: Pneumatic Signal Company of Rochester, New York; Taylor Signal Company of Buffalo, New York; and Standard Railroad Signal Company of Arlington, New Jersey. The company's headquarters and main production facility were located at 801 West Avenue in Rochester, New York.

In 1965, the General Railway Signal Corporation was created, and the firm began diversifying its product base. General Railway Signal Company was a subsidiary of General Railway Signal Corporation.

In 1998, the company became part of Alstom Transport. Although the name is no longer used, the company still manufactures equipment and instruments for process control and electrical and industrial technologies.

Scope and Contents

This small collection of photographs showcases the company's work installing centralized traffic control systems, light signals, and car retarder systems. The railroad companies pictured include: Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad; New York Central Railroad; Southern Railway; Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad; Delaware and Hudson Railroad; Canada National Railways; Denver & Salt Lake Railroad; and Louisville & Nashville Railroad. There is also an image of the Terminal Railroad Association, Pennsylvania, train test run across a bridge and the New Key System Units over pits in repair shop, G-R-S NX electric interlocking system, San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The images date from 1936 to 1951.
