Gambling as a pastime in the United States dates back to colonial times, with legality and public opinion fluctuating over time. At the turn of the twentieth century, gambling was prohibited in most states. As a response to the Great Depression and in an attempt to stimulate the economy, Nevada legalized casino gambling in 1931. Games of chance such as poker, blackjack, roulette, and craps are common table games played at casinos.
